3D gridless particle simulation of fast particle transport in Petawatt laser-plasma interactions — •Paul Gibbon — John von Neumann Institute of Computing, Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, D-53435 Jülich

Using a new parallel plasma tree-code—PEPC (see related Posters [1,2], these Proceedings), kinetic simulations of fast electron transport and ion acceleration are performed for a variety of target geometries. In particular, spherical targets are used to emulate Coulomb explosions of atomic clusters and compare with a recently developed absorption model [3]; cylindrical columns to model recent experiments by the Imperial College Group at RAL with wire targets [4]. The built-in, controllable collisionality of this method allows far more realistic modelling of particle transport in the cold, dense plasmas typical of contemporary laser-solid interaction experiments than is currently possible with standard PIC simulation.
