Equilibration of Nonideal Plasmas after Sudden Changes of the Interparticle Forces — •Michael S. Murillo1, Dirk O. We consider ionic systems, initially in equilibrium, that suddenly experience a change in the interparticle forces. This can happen by either changing the ionic charge or the background screening properties. The subsequent relaxation then establishes a new equilibrium ratio between potential and kinetic energies. Depending on the initial conditions, the ions can considerably heat or cool during the short time relaxation [1,2].

We investigate the relaxation process with two distinctly different methods: a kinetic approach based on the Kadanoff-Baym equations (KBE) [1] and molecular dynamics simulations. The results are in good agreement with respect to the general trends and the time scales of the relaxation.

An example that allows for an experimental verification is the dust component in a complex plasma, where the screening parameter (plasma temperature) and the grain charge is suddenly changed. We show that such a procedure creates over/undercorrelated states which result in a cooling/heating of the dust grains, respectively.
