Modern experiments on ultracold atoms in traps, metal clusters at helium temperatures etc. have reached temperatures where quantum degeneracy effects of these heavy particles become relevant. They exhibit clear signature of Bose or Fermi statistics depending on the nuclear spin and electronic structure. If these particles are subject to strong excitations (e.g. by means of lasers), ionization is possible which here will not only remove an electron, but also change the spin statistics of the remaining heavy particle ensemble [1,2].

We present a quantum kinetic theory which includes the ionization process and allows to describe the short-time relaxation behavior of these systems. The numerical studies were done by solving the Kadanoff–Baym equations including initial correlations. The results show that after ionization of fermionic atoms, the many-particle system of ions undergoes a gradual transition from Fermi to Bose statistics.
