The creation of fast highly charged target ions by irradiating massive targets with the PALS laser system (kJ, 0.4 ns) in Prague has been investigated in the framework of an international collaboration. The velocity distribution has been analysed with time of flight (ion collector) and Doppler-spectroscopic methods (employing two-dimensional curved x-ray Bragg crystals) in the intensity intervall of Iλ2=4· 1012 − 5· 1016 W/cm2 µm2. Whereas time of flight methods detect particles outside the interaction volume, the registration by means of Doppler shifted x-rays permits the analysis inside the dense hot plasma. Comparing both methods and selecting different line groups interesting relations to known scaling laws for fast ions are found.
