Scale separation of simulated and measured turbulence data by wavelet analysis — •Navid Mahdi-Zadeh, Mirko Ramisch, Carsten Lechte, and Ulrich Stroth — Institut für Experimentelle und Angewandte Physik der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel

Transport in magnetised plasmas has an intermittent nature. Therefore the probability density function (PDF) of radial transport fluctuatio ns deviates from the Gaussian shape. This feature was interpreted as a sign of self-organised criticality (SOC). In this work turbulence data from two non-SOC systems, a turbulence code and a low temperature plasma, were studied. In order to obtain scale separation, a continuous wavelet analyses was applied. This is the ideal tool for this kind of problems. For both simulated and experimental data radial transport and Reynolds stress fluctuations were analysed. All time traces showed an intermittent behaviour, with an increase in peakedness of the PDF at smaller scales. This points to a reason different from SOC for the intermittency of transport.
