EOS of fluid hydrogen-helium mixtures in the megabar pressure range - input for planetary models — •Volker Schwarz, Hauke Juranek, and Ronald Redmer — Universität Rostock, FB Physik, 18051 Rostock

Because of the enormous progress in the field of experimental research on solar and extrasolar planets, a lot of data has been collected which is interpreted with the help of planetary models. Therefore a good knowledge of properties of the planetary materials is needed. Major components in Jupiter-like planets are hydrogen and helium. Our aim is the calculation of the equation of state (EOS) for a mixture of hydrogen and helium in the relevant density and temperature region up to 1 Mbar and 10000 K.

The EOS is developed using Fluid Variational Theory with a self-consistent dissociation model. Effective pair potentials are used to describe the interactions between the components hydrogen atoms, helium atoms and hydrogen molecules in the system. Pressure dissociation of hydrogen molecules is described at ultra-high pressures. The EOS is checked against available shock data by means of Hugoniot curves.
