Hadronic final states of e+e annihilation at the energy region far below the Z0 resonance are sensitive to non-perturbative effects. The reanalysed JADE data collected at PETRA (1979-1986) are a unique platform to study hadronisation in the energy region √s= 14 to 44 GeV. The original detector simulation and event reconstruction software of the JADE experiment was recently reactivated, thus allowing detailed tests of phenomenological hadronisation models established at LEP. The data for event shapes observables and various particle spectra have been used to assess the performance of the QCD event generators Pythia (string fragmentation), Ariadne (colour dipole scheme), Herwig (cluster fragmentation) and Cojets (independent fragmentation) tuned to LEP1 data. Pythia is capable of describing many aspects of hadronic final states down to the lowest PETRA energies, whilst the performance of the other generators is sometimes less satisfactory.
