Thermal lens experiments on liquid mixtures — •Albert Voit and Werner Köhler — Physikalisches Institut, Universität Bayreuth, 95445 Bayreuth, Germany

We have set up a thermal lens experiment to investigate mass and heat diffusion in binary liquids. A laser beam passing through an absorbing liquid causes a refractive index modulation which, in turn, affects the laser beam. This thermal lens effect is conceptually very simple and well understood for one-component liquids. In a binary liquid mass diffusion yields an additional modulation of the refractive index. We present experimental data and a mathematical model to determine the thermal diffusivity, the mass diffusion coefficient, and the Soret-coefficent in our experiemntal setup under the assumption that heat conduction reaches a stationary state much faster than mass diffusion.
