Optical Properties of Bismuth-Borate Glasses — •I. Oprea, H. Hesse, and K. Betzler — Fachbereich Physik, Universität Osnabrück, 49069 Osnabrück

Measurements of the optical properties of Bismuth-Borate glasses of various compositions are presented. Samples with different Bi2O3/B2O3 ratios were fabricated from oxide melts with the respective compositions. The melts were thoroughly homogenized at a temperature of 1000 K and then cooled down to room temperature at a rate of 100 K per hour. The refractive indices were found to increase with increasing Bismuth content. A Sellmeier fit covering the full composition range is given. Preliminary absorption and luminescence measurement on doped samples show that these glasses are promising host materials for e. g. amplifying and lasing applications.

Support from the Niedersachsen PhD program Synthesis and Characterization of Surfaces and Interfaces assembled from Clusters and Molecules is gratefully acknowledged.
