The Laser Intensity Modulation Method is well known for measuring the pyroelectric response in planes at different distances from the surface of ferroelectrics. The technique has been combined with a laser scanning microscope for measuring x-y scans of the polarization distribution. This measuring system was applied to investigate the polarization distribution in PZT thick films in correlation with the film microstructure. First results are referring to the influence of pores and secondary phases on the surface potential. The effect of sol-gel derived PZT thin films deposited on top of a PZT thick film is studied in view of the compensation of microstructural defects, as well. Parallel to the measurements, model calculations of the electric field distribution inside and at the surface of the film were carried out. The model is based on a simplified ferroelectric material law, which is fed into a finite element code.
