Microspectroscopic investigations of the thin film growth of large organic molecules — •R. Fink1 and H. Ade21Physikalische Chemie II, Universität Erlangen, Egerlandstraße 3, 91058 Erlangen, Germany — 2NCSU Raleigh, Dept.of Physics, Box 8202, Raleigh, NC27695, USA

Due to their potential applications in OLEDs, microelectronic components, etc. organic thin films have attracted inceasing interest. In many cases sublimation of organic substances in ulrahigh vacuum is used to prepare well-defined films. However, the structural properties largely depend on the preparation parameters and the substrates used. We present an investigation, where microspectroscopic techniques are utilized, in particular XPEEM (x-ray photoelectron emission microscopy) and STXM (scanning transmission x-ray microspectroscopy) on a lateral length scale of 40 to 100 nm. Thus, we could study stoichiometric and orientational inhomogeneities in organic thin films as will be demonstrated for TCNQ-based metal-organic charge-transfer complexes, anhydrides and triblock copolymers. Since inert substrates were used the self-organizaton in the films is dominated by the intermolecular interactions. For some examples, we will demonstrate the influence of substrate patterning on the local structures (funded through the BMBF, Fkz. 05 KS1WW2/0).
