Wireless multi-hop ad hoc communication networks represent an infrastructure-less and self-organized generalization of todays wireless networks. Using a graph-theoretical approach and methods from Statistical Physics, the topology of these networks can be analysed and optimized. Graph-theoretical estimates for the end-to-end throughput of wireless ad hoc networks are established and discussed. We demonstrate, that a critical network size exists, below which a fully connected network always yields a larger end-to-end throughput. This result is confirmed with a generic data traffic simulation. Borrowing optimization methods from Statistical Physics, the topology of wireless networks is further throughput optimized, thus significantly increasing the end-to-end throughput and reducing the critical network size. This calls for a sophisticated transmission power control protocol.
