Pattern formation of ion channels in the presence of external stimuli — •Stephan Kramer and Reiner Kree — Institut f. Theoretische Physik, Universität Göttingen, Bunsenstr. 9, 37073 Göttingen

We study the spatio-temporal pattern formation of membrane-bound ion channels interacting with lateral gradients of the membrane potential. A model with several populations has been formulated as a reaction-diffusion system [1]. Without external stimuli it shows bifurcations to both spatial and spatio-temporal patterns, depending on the reversal potential as control parameter.

We analyze the influence of oscillations of external currents and externally driven gating properties. Within our model we show that a time-dependent external current is equivalent to an oscillating control parameter. We present the dependence of stable patterns on amplitude and frequency of stimulus and discuss the stabilization and destabilization of patterns from the undriven system.
