Dewetting of a thin polymer film is a dynamical process in the course of which complex morphologies evolve and which moreover is an ideal system to study 2d spinodal decomposition. Recording peculiarities of the process in the experiment, we can determine system parameters like the free energy or the viscosity. Using these parameters, realistic simulations (performed by G. Grün and J. Becker, Uni Bonn) are possible. Both the scanning probe microscopy experiments and the simulations - based on lubrication approximation - result in topographical maps of the films. In order to characterize the dewetting process in experiments and simulations quantitatively, we use integral geometrical methods: The maps are sliced into isosurfaces, on top of which we determine the Minkowski measures. The results show that the simulations mimic the experimental system quite successfully [1] and we find scaling laws in the dynamical behavior of the experimental system that call for a theoretical explanation. We moreover compare the analysis by Minkowski measures with ‘traditional’ image analysis procedures like Fourier transformation.
