Two-dimensional arrays of gold nanoparticles written by electron beam lithography show optical properties determined by particle plasmon and photonic bandstructure effects. Decorating these structures with optically amplifying organic semiconductors opens a novel route to a distributed feedback (DFB) laser which already incorporates an electrical contact layer as integral part of the Bragg resonator.

The emission spectra of such lasers show separate modes linearly polarized in the x- and y- direction which can be spectrally shifted relative to each other by incorporating a mismatch between x- and y-lattice constants of the metal nanoparticle grating. Varying the gold particle size and shape has less influence on the laser characteristics than adjusting the effective refractive index of the structure by varying the thickness of the organic semiconductor layer. This indicates that particle plasmon effects play a less significant role than the photonic bandstructure.
