A high-vacuum apparatus for the measurement of hydrogen gas permeation through metal membranes has been developed to perform studies in the range of low pressure and medium temperature. The hydrogen permeation is measured for pure Pd, Fe, and Ni membranes and the results are compared with data in the literature. Furthermore, multilayer systems of Pd/Fe and Pd/Ni were prepared by ion-beam sputtering using Pd foils as substrate. The permeation through these multilayer systems is lower for Fe and higher for Ni, respectively, as compared to estimated values using the bulk permeabilities of Pd, Fe, and Ni. The results are discussed by taking into account the microstructure of the thin Fe and Ni layers. In the case of Ni films, the hydrogen permeation is dominated by grain boundary diffusion.
