New strong and high elastic metallic materials — •Guo He, Wolfgang Löser, Jürgen Eckert, and Ludwig Schultz — IFW Dresden, Postfach 270116, D-01171 Dresden, Germany

Based on the comprehensive investigation of bulk metallic glasses (BMG) and bulk nanostructured materials, we have developed a new group of strong and high elastic metallic materials. These materials usually have a mixture of nanostructured (or glassy) matrix and micrometer-sized ductile phases, e.g., glassy-matrix + dendritic crystalline phase(s), glassy phase + nanostructure phase + dendritic crystalline phase, nanostructured matrix + dendritic crystalline phase, etc. The bulk materials exhibit a high fracture strength in range of 1800 MPa to 2500 MPa and a high elastic strain up to 4 pct. together with a large plastic strain up to 20 pct. at room temperature. Our experiments show strong evidences that the high strength and the good ductility are achieved by the role of the micrometer-sized ductile phase in the composite microstructure of the materials which acts as obstacles to restrict the excessive shear bands in the glassy or nanostructured matrix.
