Exploring the Nano Structures in Metals: Analysis with the Tomographic Atom Probe (TAP) — •Talaat Al-Kassab — Institut für Materialphysik, Hospitalstr. 3-7, 37073 Göttingen

Nano-structured materials are currently of appreciable interest for different applications in materials science and engineering. The attractive properties of these materials are due to the constitution of internal interfaces, which exist in a large volume fraction in these structures. However, any application of such materials requires the preservation and optimization of the nano–structure, which is basically affected by thermal ageing resulting in grain growth, segregation of minor additives and or even the formation of second phases. Hence, it becomes essential to study the evaluation of these structures as a function of time and temperature on an atomic scale.

The analysis of such structures makes high demands on many experimental techniques since the relevant features have the dimension of some nanometers. In particular, the determination of local chemical gradients appears to be extremely difficult but could be successfully performed by means of the tomographic atom probe as will be exemplified in this review.
