Oxygen Transport Properties of the Nanostructured Solid Electrolyte n-ZrO2 ·Y2O3 — •Ralf Röwer, Gregor Knöner, Franz Leis, Klaus Reimann, and Hans-Eckhardt Schaefer — Institut für Theor. und Angew. Physik, Universität Stuttgart, 70550 Stuttgart

Nanostructured yttria stabilized zirconia (ZrO2 ·Y2O3) specimens are prepared by sputtering a ZrY alloy target followed by cluster condensation, in situ compaction, oxidation and sintering. A comprehensive characterization of the specimens using density measurements, x-ray spectroscopy, chemical analysis and TEM yields a clear picture of the properties and microstructure of the specimens.

First measurements of the oxygen diffusion in nanostructured ZrO2 ·Y2O3 are accomplished by using 18O as a tracer and Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) for depth profiling. The 18O Diffusion profiles are much deeper in the nanocrystalline specimens than in single crystals, resulting in an increased effective oxygen diffusivity.
