Ni and Co diffusion in Fe-Al binary alloys of three different compositions and Ni diffusion in Ni-Fe-Al ternary alloys of two compositions has been investigated. The radiotracer method in combination with the serial sectioning technique has been used for diffusion profile determination in the temperature range from 990 to 1460 K. The overall diffusion permeability was found to decrease as the Al content of the binary alloys increases. The change in pre-exponential factors is predominant since activation enthalpy varies insignificantly. Tracer experiments were also performed in NixFe50−xAl50 ternary alloys with x=5 and x=10 at%. The results show that in the analysed temperature range the Ni diffusivity decreases drastically with increase of Ni content, although the corresponding activation enthalpies decrease. The diffusion behaviour of binary alloys is discussed together with the In and Zn solute- and Fe self-diffusion measurements previously made in our laboratory. Activation enthalpies in ternary alloys are compared with the newest Ni diffusion results on NixFe50−xAl50 compounds at Ni50Al50 side of the ternary phase diagram which are currently in progress at our laboratory.
