Thermally induced Ag nanoparticle formation in ion-exchanged glass: Influence of the iron oxide content — •Kl.-D. Schicke1, H. Hofmeister1, and M. Dubiel21MPI f. Mikrostrukturphysik, Weinberg 2, 06120 Halle — 2Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, FB Physik, 06099 Halle

Silver nanoparticles embedded in glass are of special interest because of their optical properties, especially for particle sizes below 10 nm. These depend strongly on concentration, size and the corresponding size distribution. In spite of this fact, the depth dependent formation of silver nanoparticles in glass using the ion exchange technique needs a better understanding.

Electron microscopy was used to study this issue at ion-exchanged soda lime glass containing about 0.9 and 1.8 wt% Fe2O3 with Fe2+ as reductive. Cross-section preparation was applied to monitor size, spatial arrangement and concentration of particles formed upon ion exchange at 330 C as well as upon additional thermal processing at elevated tem-peratures. These characteristics are sensitively influenced by the content of reductive present and by temperature and duration of the thermal processes involved (diffusion, reduction, nucleation and growth). The depth-dependent evaluation of the parameters of particle formation like size and concentration is aimed at avoiding non-uniform particle arrangement and bi-modal size distribution.
