Formation and Properties of Cu47Ti33Zr11Ni8Si1 Metallic Glass Composite With Second Phase Cu Particles — •Shankar Venkataraman1, Birgit Bartusch1, Jürgen Eckert1, Ludwig Schultz1, and Dan Sordelet21IFW Dresden, Institute for Metallic Materials, P.O. Box 270016, D-01171, Dresden, Germany — 2Ames Laboratory, Ames, Iowa 50014, USA

Amorphous gas atomised powders having a nominal composition of Cu47Ti33Zr11Ni8Si1 were subsequently blended with varying volume fractions of Cu particles in a planetary ball mill. Characterisation of the resultant powder mixture was carried out by x-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. Thermomechanical analysis was performed to study the viscosity decrease in the supercooled liquid region. Electron microscopy was used for microstructural examination of the blended composite mixtures. Compression tests of extruded bulk metallic glass matrix composite samples have been performed to investigate the mechanical behaviour. The influence of Cu addition on the phase stability during ball milling as well as on the thermal stability and the room temperature deformation behaviour of the mechanically attrited powders and consolidated bulk specimens are assessed.
