Magnetic and electron-spin-resonance properties of nitridometalates(I) — •V.A. Ivanshin, R. Niewa, W. Schnelle, J. Sichelschmidt, and R. Kniep — Max-Planck-Institut für Chemische Physik fester Stoffe, Nöthnitzer Str. 40, 01187 Dresden, Germany

For some time we are studying the chemical and physical properties of the nitridometalates Li2[(Li1−xMx)N] (M = Cu, Ni, Co, Fe, Mn) with the transition metals in the unusually low oxidation state +1. Magnetization and electron-spin-resonance (ESR) studies revealed the presence of composition dependent magnetic moments and average g-values, which can be much larger than the spin-only values. Especially in M = Fe and x = 0.21; 0.16, huge internal fields were observed in Mössbauer experiments [1]. ESR confirmed for Fe, Co, Ni the +1 oxidation state of these 3d ions. Strong ESR signals ascribed to the corresponding ions were observed. A possible cluster formation, especially at x ≥ 0.10, is also investigated. Cu2+ as impurity ion of a very low concentration (≈ 1 % of all Cu-spins) has been detected using ESR in the Cu-based samples. [1] J. Klatyk et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 88 207202 (2002)
