Modeling of Dendritic Solidification From Undercooled Melts — •Peter Galenko and Dieter M. Herlach — Institute of Space Simulation, German Aerospace Center (DLR), D-51170 Köln, Germany

In the present report the results on modeling of dendritic solidification from undercooled liquid are discussed. We develop a sharp-interface model of steady-state dendritic growth with forced convective flow of the liquid phase. In order to model the details of formation of dendritic pattern we develop a program code based on the phase-field methodology of dendritic growth. The predictions of the sharp-interface model and phase-field model are tested in comparison with the previously obtained experimental data as well as data of additionally performed measurements of dendritic growth in electromagnetically levitated droplets of pure nickel. The model predictions are compared with the measurements of the dendritic growth velocity versus the amount of undercooling. A special attention is paid to consideration for dendritic growth at small undercoolings when systematic deviation of experimental data from theoretical predictions exists.
