Processing Methods and Mechanical Properties of Al-based Quasicrystalline Composites — •Jürgen Eckert, Frank Schurack, and Ludwig Schultz — IFW Dresden, Institut für Metallische Werkstoffe, PF 270016, 01171 Dresden

This paper focusses on quasicrystalline Al-Mn-Ce and Al-Cu-Fe melt-spun ribbons, mechanically alloyed powders, and consolidated bulk specimens prepared by extrusion at elevated temperatures. Results for the development of the microstructure under different processing conditions and for the thermal stability of the metastable alloys will be given. Significant differences in the phase formation upon quenching or solid state reaction, in the composite microstructure and in the thermal stability of the microstructure are found for the different alloy compositions. Grain growth during the subsequent consolidation by hot extrusion causes the formation of a micrometer-scale composite instead of the nanoscale phase mixture initially existing in the as-prepared samples. Data for the mechanical deformation behavior at different temperatures will be presented, revealing that the properties can be tuned within a wide range of strength and ductility as a function of volume fraction and morphology of the different phases, yielding excellent properties compared to conventionally produced aluminum-based alloys.
