Hydrogen-induced damping peaks in Ti-Zr-Ni quasicrystals — •Igor Golovin1, Hans-Rainer Sinning1, and Adrian Jianu21Institut für Werkstoffe, TU Braunschweig, Langer Kamp 8, 38106 Braunschweig — 2Physik neuer Materialien, Univ. Rostock, August-Bebel-Str. 55, 18051 Rostock

Hydrogen-induced mechanical loss peaks, ascribed to a Snoek-type reorientation relaxation in icosahedral quasicrystals, were measured on melt-spun Ti-Zr-Ni alloys (compositions between Ti53Zr27Ni20 and Ti41Zr42Ni17 ) using the vibrating-reed technique. In a range of H concentrations between ∼ 0.001 and 0.1 H/M, we find differences in the properties of these relaxation peaks between different alloy compositions, like an increase in the local H diffusivity in the sequence Zr69.5Cu12Ni11Al7.5Ti53Zr27Ni20Ti41Zr42Ni17 , combined with some changes in width and shape of the peak. These differences are discussed with respect to the question how far they reflect different short-range order in the respective icosahedral phases.
