The competition between shape and surface (interface) anisotropy causes in thin magnetic films a change of the magnetization from in-plane at low temperatures or small film thicknesses to out-of-plane with increasing temperature or film thickness. We imaged magnetic domains as a function of temperature during such a spin reorientation transition in the multilayered system (5Å Fe/5Å Gd)×30 by photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) at the Swiss light source (SLS). Starting with a perpendicular magnetization at room temperature, in-plane domains nucleate and grow with increasing temperature. In the temperature range between 30C and 53C out-of-plane and in-plane domains coexist, whereas the magnetization is completely in-plane above 53C. Investigations by Kerr microscopy show that this spin reorientation transition can be induced also by an external magnetic field.
