SEARCH OF THE GROWTH CONDITIONS OF THE HEUSLER PHASES Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al IN THIN FILMS BY LASER ABLATION — •virginie BEAUMONT, Gerhard Jakob, and Hernan Adrian — Institut für Physik, Johannes Gutenberg–Universität, 55099

In the last years there is a great interest for ferromagnetic half metals due to their potential for applications in magnetic sensors and magnetic random access memories. Recent results of Felser et al. on the bulk material Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al show a magnetoresitive effect of 24 % in a small magnetic field of 0.1 Tesla. We report on the growth of polycrystalline thin films of Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al by pulsed laser deposition onto silicon and magnesium oxide substrates. The difficulty of this films growth results from the fact that these phases are easily oxydized what degrades their properties. Particular precautions must be taken concerning the preparation of the targets, as well as the quality of gases and the limiting pressure of the deposition chamber. The films were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), TEM, AFM and SQUID magnetometry.
