Ab-initio investigation of the damping of the ultrafast spin dynamics in low-dimensional magnets — •Daniel Steiauf, Claude Ederer, and Manfred Fähnle — Max-Planck-Institut für Metallforschung, Heisenbergstraße 3, 70569 Stuttgart

The damping of the ultrafast spin dynamics plays an important role for the magnetization reversal dynamics and for the collective linear and nonlinear spin excitations in nano-structured magnets. It is determined by the rate of exchange of energy between the spin system and the lattice which is mediated by the spin-orbit coupling. As the most essential feature of low-dimensional magnets is the strong enhancement of the spin-orbit coupling effects it is expected that the damping increases when going to lower dimensional systems. We demonstrate this by combining a phenomenological relaxation theory (model of the breathing Fermi surface [1]) with the ab-initio density functional electron theory for the case of a monatomic magnetic wire. Possible implications of the strong damping on the nature of the nonlinear excitations in these one-dimensional systems are discussed.
