Lifetime of an empty surface state on Cu(110)(2x1)O — •J. Hager, T. Michalke, and R. Matzdorf — Physikalisches Institut, Universität Würzburg, Am Hubland, D-97074 Würzburg

On Cu(110)(2x1)O we have observed the onset of a surface state band at 0.56eV above the Fermi-energy by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. This surface state was discovered by IPES several years ago, but has not been studied in detail so far. It is located around the Ȳ-point of the surface Brillouin-zone and is expected to be derived from the Shockley surface state on Cu(110). We have measured the quasi-particle lifetime of the electrons by analyzing the energy-width of the onset in the density of states. At low oxygen coverage quasi one-dimensional stripes are formed due to self-organisation. We have studied the binding energy and lifetime of the surface state as function of stripe-width. Surprisingly, the lifetime is reduced dramatically with decreasing width of the stripes.
