Optical characterization of planar nanoparticles produced using self-assembled layers of colloids — •Manuel Gonçalves and Othmar Marti — Universität Ulm - Abteilung Experimentelle Physik, Albert-Einstein-Allee 11, D.89069 Ulm

Self-assembled layers of colloidal solutions of polystyrene (PS) beads have been used to produce planar particles on flat surfaces.

The method consists on the deposition of a solution drop, using an adequate solvent, on the substrate surface and let it dry. The monodisperse polystyrene beads with diameter between 60 nm and 6000 nm tend to form close-packed hexagonal arrays with crystals of 1 or more layers and with sizes up to tenths of µm2 [1].

Using this method we could generate different particle arrays by evaporating a metal over the PS coating, allowing the a projection pattern [2], following be a subsequent removal of the spheres .

Optical measurements using confocal and SNOM microscopy techniques have been done in order to characterize the planar particles scattering and absorption.

Some optical devices can envisaged based on the optical scattering characteristics of the particles and coatings studied.
