Design and test of an improved optical detection system for STM induced photon emission — •P. Schmidt, T. Jürgens, J. Kuntze, and R. Berndt — Institut für Experimentelle und Angewandte Physik der Universität Kiel, D-24098 Kiel

To improve the signal to noise ratio in STM induced photon emission an efficient optical detection system is crucial. We present a system of lenses optimized for highest transmission over a wide range of wavelengths. A detailed analysis shows that beams far away from the lens axis contribute significantly to the total intensity, suggesting the use of only a short lens separation for detection. Test measurements demonstrate the validity of our calculational approach.
