Magnetism at the nanoscale — •J. Kirschner — Max-Planck-Institut für Mikrostrukturphysik, Weinberg 2, 06120 Halle (Saale)

Basic research on magnetism at the nanoscale is a fascinating field because quantum phenomena on the scale of the exchange length tend to determine even macroscopic quantities. Another driving force is the current development in the field of magneto-electronics, where the electron spin is used as a carrier of information. I report on newly developed tools to address magnetism at the nanoscale, like the spin-polarized tunneling microscope and photoelectron emission microscopy with magnetic circular dichroism. Very narrow domain walls (down to 1 nm width) are found on Co single crystals. Coupling between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic layers leads to surprising effects on the respective domain structures. Quasi-one dimensional chain structures of iron are shown to follow the behavior of Ising chains.
