Phase-change optical recording: material issues and media designs — •Andrei V. Mijiritskii — Storage Physics, Philips Research Laboratories, Prof. Holstlaan 4, 5656AA Eindhoven, The Netherlands

Nowadays, optical data storage is a mature technology that has become a part of our day to day life. It allows a cheap and easy way of content distribution on CDs and DVDs. It enables us to create our own audio, photo and video libraries. And in the world of memory-hungry computer applications it has become an indispensable tool for information exchange. Three types of optical media exist: read-only memory (ROM), recordable (R), and rewritable (RW). In the case of rewritable media data recording process is based on phase-change principle. To store the No-dq0No-dqs and No-dq1No-dqs of digital data, optical properties of a recording stack comprising a layer of phase-change material are changed by means of a focused laser beam. For reliability and robustness of data storage and retrieval, optical, thermal and mechanical properties of the recording stacks should meet a number of requirements. In this presentation, principles of phase-change recording will be explained and material issues and recording stack designs will be addressed.
