Cyclization of a Polymer: An Exact Solution — •Igor Sokolov — Institut für Physik der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Invalidenstraße 110, 10115 Berlin

Cyclization of a polymer molecule (equivalently describing luminescence quenching in a system of a donor and acceptor or resonance energy transfer between the dye molecules attached to the ends of a polymer) belongs to the most complex problems of reaction kinetics: The reaction takes place in a system exhibiting non-Markovian behavior on the timescales of interest. Even in simplest cases only approximate solutions are known. We show that the knowledge of the joint three-time probability distribution of the end-to-end distance is sufficient for the full description of the reaction kinetics, so that the survival probability follows rigorously as a solution of the Volterra integral equation [1]. The corresponding kinetics can readily be evaluated for Gaussian models, e.g. for a Rouse chain. We also discuss how do the Wilemski-Fixman theory [2] and similar approximations appear from the exact scheme due to decoupling.
