Static and dynamic magnetic properties of mesoscopic transition metal ion clusters — •Bernd Pilawa — Physikalisches Institut, Universität Karlsruhe (TH)

The investigation of the crossover between classical and quantum physics is the subject of the attractive field of ’mesoscopic’ systems. New and fascinating mesoscopic effects can be expected. Nanometer-sized magnetic particles are situated at the border between classical and quantum magnetism. Chemists are developing successful strategies for the synthesis of larger and larger clusters which are in general magnetic when the individual metal ions are magnetic by themselves. The discovery of molecules that can function as nanoscale magnets opens the view on technologically very challenging applications (information storage, permanent magnets ..). In this talk the results obtained by magnetization, electron and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements for cluster systems with two to sixteen interacting metal ions will reviewed. It will be shown how the electronic structure of the magnetic clusters can be elaborated and information about such an exotic phenomenon as quantum tunneling in mesoscopic systems can be obtained.
