We use the method described in [1] for probing the state of a fluxon in a heart-shaped Josephson junction. In this system a one-dimensional double well potential for the fluxon is formed by an applied magnetic field. In order to select junctions for experiments in the quantum regime, the samples are characterized in the high temperature limit. The properties of the effective fluxon potential are determined from thermal activation data. We apply this method to characterize samples structured using either photolithography or electron-beam lithography. [1] A. Kemp et al. Phys. stat. sol. (b) 233, No. 3,472-481 (2002)
