Solid state quantum computing with single spins — •Iulian Popa, Torsten Gaebel, Achim Gruber, Fedor Jelezko, and Joerg Wrachtrup — 3. Physikalisches Institut, Universitaet Stuttgart, 70550 Stuttgart, Germany

Single paramagnetic defect centers in diamond are investigated as possible candidates for qubit implementation. The present approach employs two well-known techniques: Single Molecule Spectroscopy (SMS) and Optical Detection of Magnetic Resonance (ODMR). The proposed system consists of a C13 nuclear spin (I = 1/2) coupled to an N-V (Nitrogen-Vacancy) defect center (S = 1) in the diamond lattice. The single defect center can be optically detected by scanning confocal microscopy. Based on the hyperfine coupling between the nucleus and the defect center, the nuclear states can be addressed on a single nucleus basis. The method has similar advantages to those of bulk Nuclear Magnetic Resonance: long coherence time and easy realization of quantum logical gates. Furthermore, it allows for the performing of the quantum gates using pure spin states. The system is also scalable to a higher order then any system involving spins.
