The critical current density of YBCO thin films strongly depends on the properties (lattice parameter, surface morphology, defect structure) of the substrate. We measured these properties of ion irradiated, single crystalline STO substrates, as well as the corresponding surface morphology , critical currents and microstructure of YBCO thin films grown on them. The substrates are investigated by surface sensitive methods as AFM and optical coherence interferometry and also by bulk sensitive x-ray diffraction. YBCO films grown on top of the modified substrates can exhibit an increased critical current density compared to the films on the virgin substrate. This effect is visualized and analyzed by applying the magneto-optical Faraday effect. The enhanced current density can be attributed to microstructural flux pinning at additional defects. This concept will be supported by TEM measurements.
