Magnetic frictional heating in the high-field phase of CuGeO3 — •Klaus Kiefer1 and Mechthild Enderle21Technische Physik, Universität des Saarlandes, 66123 Saarbrücken — 2Institut Laue Langevin, Grenoble, France

The incommensurate high-field phase of the inorganic spin-Peierls compound CuGeO3 has been studied by specific heat, magnetocaloric effect and magnetization measurements. In the incommensurate phase a lattice of solitons forms with both structural and magnetic components. On variation of the magnetic field, the distance between solitons changes. Our measurements show that the soliton lattice is not freely floating in the crystal lattice. The solitons are pinned in metastable states leading to hysteresis and frictional heating.
