TRIµP - Radioactive Isotope Trapping Facility at KVI — •U. Dammalapati, G.P. Berg, P. Dendooven, O. Dermois, M.N. Harakeh, R. Hoekstra, K. Jungmann, R. Morgenstern, A. Rogachevskiy, M. Sanchez-Vega, R. Timmermans, E. Traykov, L. Willmann, and H.W. Wilschut — Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut, Groningen, The Netherlands

At the Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut (KVI) a user facility (TRIµP) for trapping radioactive isotopes is being set up. A wide spectrum of radioactive isotopes will be produced in direct, in fission, and in fusion-evaporation reactions using inverse kinematics. The facility will be based on heavy ion beams from the superconducting AGOR cyclotron. The reaction products will be separated from the primary beam in a magnetic device. The isotopes of interest shall be slowed down in a gas volume. Radial confinement will be provided by a radiofrequency quadrupole system. After neutralization the atoms will be cooled to below mK temperatures and stored in an atom trap (magneto optical trap). Among the systems of particular interest to the local group are certain Ne, Na and Ra isotopes for studies fundamental interactions and symmetries. The focus here is on precision studies of nuclear β-decays, through β–neutrino(recoil nucleus) correlations and searches for permanent electric dipole moments. The facility will be open for use by outside scientific groups.
