Recent progress in the theory of atomic lithium allowed the theoretical evaluation of the mass-dependent isotope shift in optical transitions to an accuracy better than 10−5 [1]. These calculations are the foundation for experimental efforts, currently under way at GSI Darmstadt, to determine the root-mean-square (rms) charge radius of the unstable lithium isotopes, particularly the charge radius of the halo nucleus 11Li [2]. It has been pointed out by Yan & Drake [1] that the comparison of theoretical predictions with experimental data obtained on the 2S→ 2P transition for the stable isotopes 6,7Li is not conclusive, since the measured isotope shifts are partially inconsistent with each other and with theory. Therefore, we measured the 6,7Li IS in the 2S→ 3S two-photon transition using resonance ionization mass spectroscopy on an atomic beam. This transition will be used for spectroscopy of unstable lithium isotopes in future experiments at GSI and ISOLDE/CERN. Results of our measurements are presented and compared with theory and previous experiments on other transitions. The implications for the determination of the charge radius of 11Li are discussed.
