Strong field ionization of molecules is under active investigation. Here we report on the first differential experimental data for double ionization of molecules. By using correlated e - ion momentum spectroscopy, we measured the momenta of both electrons emitted in double ionization of the diatomic molecules N2 and O2 with 35 fs laser pulses at center wavelength of 800 nm. The light intensity was chosen in a regime where non-sequential double ionization dominates. We find that the correlated two electron momemtum distributions for these molecules differ from the available data for atoms in that a local maximum at small momemta for both electrons is present. Our experimental results also show that a prominent difference in electron momemtum correlation between N2 and O2 exists, inplying that the correlated electron dynamics is highly molecule specific.
