Multiple photoionization of fullerenes and metal clusters. — •Oleg Kidun, Natasha Fominykh, and Jamal Berakdar — Max-Planck Institut für Mikrostrukturphysik, Weinberg 2, 06120 Halle

For the description of the multiple ionization of fullerenes and clusters by a single photon, the statistical energy deposition model [1] is used. Within this model, the process of multiple photoionization is treated as a three-stage event. First, the energy of the photon is absorbed by one of the bound electrons of the target. Then, the kinetic energy of this excited photoelectron is transferred to electronic excitations of the cluster. In the third stage, the deposited energy is distributed among all target electrons and the system subsequently autoionizes to reach its final ionization state. We calculate the Coulomb and the single photoionization matrix elements of the multielectron targets in the Hartree-Fock approximation and the Random Phase Approximation with Exchange. This procedure renders possible an insight into the material, structural and energy dependence of the multiple ionization processes. For the first time the probabilities of different multiple photoionization reactions in C60 and lithium clusters are compared and analyzed, and their order of magnitude is evaluated.
