Optically Trapped Atoms as a Target for Molecular Ion Beams — •Wenzel Salzmann, Roland Wester, and Matthias Wester — Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, Postfach 103980, 69029 Heidelberg

We are setting up a new experiment in which we combine a magneto-optical trap for alkali atoms with Recoil Ion Momentum Spectroscopy (RIMS)[1]. The projectile ion beam will consist of diatomic molecular ions at keV energies (in particular H2+). The RIMS technique allows a kinematically complete collision experiment which gives precise information on both the energy and momentum exchange between projectile and target. By using optical manipulation techniques the target can be prepared in a well defined internal state. Additionally, due to optical cooling one can expect a limit in the momentum resolution to be of the order 10−2 a.u. With this setup we will investigate charge transfer collisions between the trapped atoms and molecular ions. This will open a new approach to map the electronic manifold of highly excited molecular Rydberg states. In a second step the molecular ions will be stored in a linear electrostatic trap[2] in order to achieve efficient relaxation of internal motion into the rovibrational ground state.

The poster will introduce the physics behind our experiment and show the current status of the setup.
