A magneto-optical trap for cesium atoms has been implemented into the heavy-ion storage ring TSR in Heidelberg. The ultracold sample can either be used as a high-precision diagnostic tool for the characterization of ion beams or as a target for the study of ion-atom collisions.

Interactions between the Cs atoms and different ion species at energies of 1 − 10 MeV/u are investigated. Using the well localized atom cloud as a probe, the ion beam profile is measured with high precision and sensitivity. The total cross section for ionizing collisions is determined for different charge states of the projectile with an accuracy on the 10% level. Charge transfer collisions involving inner-shell electrons of the target are analyzed by recording the final charge states for the ionized target atoms.

Ultracold atoms as a new kind of target yield a deeper insight into collisions of highly-charged ions with complex atoms. Future applications will be discussed.
