Excitation and Fragmentation: Seventy years of Entangled States. — •John Briggs — Theoretische Quantendynamik, Physikalisches Institut, Universität Freiburg, 79104 Freiburg

A collision complex in atomic and molecular physics, whether produced by particle or photon collision is the classic case of the formation of an entangled state in quantum physics. The complex has typically many fragmentation channels open and which state is realised is dictated by which states or fragments are detected ’down-line’ in the experiment. The theoretical description of such complexes, usually known as the ’close-coupling method’ was given as early as 1931 in the book ’Theory of Atomic Collisions’ by Mott and Massey. Recent developments in multi-particle coincident detection techniques have enlarged the possibilities of the detection of quantum coherences in collision complexes. The talk will review classic experiments in the field and discuss modern developments which, for example, have opened up the prospects of studying decoherence, localisation and EPR-type correlations directly with material particles.
