The role of science and technology in developing the instruments of war is well known, if little understood. The technical equipment for making peace however, is infrequently studied and developed. There are many technologies useful for monitoring international treaties in disarmament and conflict prevention and for monitoring peace agreements in peacekeeping missions. The paper outlines the various technologies, looks at aspects of research in this field, including the manner in which research is funded and used, and suggests ways for scientists to take a more active role in this important endeavour.
