The mechanisms and time scales for energy redistribution in large molecular systems are of considerable interest to understanding and controlling their dynamical behavior. The fragmentation and ionization dynamics yield important information about the energy redistribution within molecules and clusters. Single laser pulse experiments on gas phase C60, where the pulse duration has been varied between 30 fs and 5 ps, have been interpreted to show three relaxation times [1]. The electronic cooling from the electronic excitation to the electronic bath is seen to relax within 100 fs, the electron-phonon coupling time occurred between 300 fs and 700 fs, and finally the coupling among all vibrational degrees of freedom beyond 1 ps. The pump-probe technique has been recently applied to gas phase C60 to further understand the relaxation dynamics and look at times beyond 5 ps. Results from the recent pump-probe measurements will be discussed in the presentation.
