Applying a three sector field mass spectrometer (BEE geometry) metastable decay reactions of the singly charged parent ion C3H8+ and a doubly charged fragment C3H52+ were studied in two field free regions by MIKE scan technique. Thereby it is possible to determine the kinetic energy release (KER) distribution in two different time windows after the ion formation (electron impact ionization of propane). The time dependence of the average KER for the hydrogen abstraction from C3H8+ is nicely reproduced by Finite Heat Bath Theory. The experimentally determined KER for the splitting of the C3H52+ in two singly charged ions C2H2+ and CH3+ agrees well with the results of high level ab initio quantum chemical calculations and indicates that essentially all energy available in the reaction is partitioned into kinetic energy.
